FAMILY CHARTS - PEDIGREES.

Our policy is that we will not make available extensive family charts on this site. During the initial period when the site is not accessed by registered members only, the extent of any charts will be very restricted. Again it is stated policy that we do not transfer any charts to the worldwide sites which have been set up to encourage the sharing of such charts. The aim of spreading the information is commendable, but the experience of may is that when a chart, normally in the form of a 'gedcom', is uploaded it is then copied and claimed by others, this means that any correction and additions cannot be easily made, this reduces the value of the research work undertaken by the initial compiler. Anyone obtaining any data from this site is requested to observe this policy.

COCUS-WOODHOUSE PEDIGREE,
This pedigree is offered without any warranty of its accuracy although I believe that it could well be genuine and accurate.
It may be that the original COCUS name, being French for Cook, could refer to one of the families brought over by William the Conqueror in 1066. He did make grants of land to his major supporters and this could be handed down to the first William Cocus. The desirability of French landowners controlling English peasants to use a name, which the subjects would recognise, would explain the change of name, and adopting the name of the place of residence would make good sense.
The following is a copy of a poor quality typed sheet with a number of corrections, I have tried to preserve the erratic punctuation and abbreviations, all of which require the user to accept that the accuracy of the information is questionable.

This is an ideal illustration of the way that the Woodhouse name has originated by choosing a surname which is descriptive of the place of residence of the family. For this reason there will have been many points of origin and it will never be possible to trace all families back to one individual.

The pedigree continues up to the early 1900's and is based initially around Staffordshire, Lichfield, Rowley Regis, and Sherbourne, but spreads through Middlesex to Exeter and Winchester, even to Sabor in India and Holfontein in West Transvaal.For anyone who has good reason to believe that they have a link into this family and would like a copy of the full pedigree please send your request with some indication of your connection to Ron Woodhouse. It may be possible that the Saint Blessed Thomas Woodhouse is connected since there is in the pedigree a history of sons named Thomas or Benedict and many of them were ordained ministers.

The pedigree of William Woodhouse the artist could possibly be linked to that of William Woodhouse of Massachusetts. The artist's family being long established in the fishing industry would be well placed to have had one of their family emigrate to America. They were seafarers based on the west coast of England which saw many of the early emigrants sailing to the 'New World' where land was available for the asking and land was the mark of wealth and position in England then as indeed it is now. On the subject of ownership of land, moving north from Staffordshire and the Cocus-Woodhouse locality, we find a Woodhouse-Harvey family combination which was a land owning family. They were based in Lincolnshire and Derbyshire and had a number of clergy in the family and held political influence.

This map on velum is held by the Doncaster Archives Department and shows the area of the estate of Gervase Woodhouse in the Parish of Owston a village in north Lincolnshire in 1765. It seems that he owned the whole village and a large area outside it. The map also shows the ancient practice of 'strip farming' where the land was divided up into family plots of long narrow shapes or strips of land.

Lesser known families are based in West Yorkshire, Huddersfield especially. Also around Birmingham and the midlands. My own family seems to come from the southern part of West Yorkshire, Wakefield and Doncaster, with John Woodhouse the Mormon pioneer being born in Adwick le Street just north of Doncaster.
